Airline started as European division of United Kingdom's flag carrier BOAC. In 1947 British government nationalized airline industry and all the independent airlines in Britain became part of BEA. These included
Allied Airways, Channel Islands Airways, Great Western & Southern Airlines, Highland Airways, Isle of Man Air Services, North Eastern Airways, Railway Air Services, West Coast Air Services, Scottish Airlines and Western Isles Airways
BEA owned two airlines that were operated with separate identity
Cambrian Airways based in Cardiff and Northeast Airlines (BKS Air Transport) based in Newcastle
BEA later acquired Vickers Viscounts, De Havilland Comets Tridents and BAC 1-11s
In 1974 British government decided to join BOAC and BEA to form British Airways
