After Singapore was expelled from Malaysia in 1965 and formed its own republic. The flag carrier Malaysia Airlines changed name to MAS Malaysia-Singapore Airlines in November 1967 reflecting the fact that it was now serving two independent nations.
Malaysian Airline System (Sharikat Penerbangan Malaysia) name was adopted in April 1971 when Singapore formed its own airline Singapore Airlines. MAS commenced its long-haul service to London in 1974 using Boeing 707s. These were replaced with Douglas DC-10s starting in 1976.
MAS serves destinations in Europe (Frankfurt, London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Stockholm), Middle East (Beirut, Cairo, Jeddah, Kuwait, Dubai, Bahrain, Doha), Australia (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Perth, Adelaide), East Asia (Seoul, Osaka, Tokyo, Fukuoka, Beijing, Xiamen, Shanghai, Taipei, Kaohsiung, Manila, Cebu), South Asia (Tashkent, Delhi, Karachi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hydebarad, Dhaka, Male, Colombo, Yangoon, Hanoi, Bangkok, Kunming), and Los Angeles, New York in the Americas. It also operates massive domestic network as there is little competition and country is split by sea. Airline has built reputation of service only second to that of Singapore Airlines. Airline posted record losses in 2005, but have been able to recover and become profitable again. Malaysia Airlines employs circa 17,000 and handles over 18 million passengers annualy (2008).
